Spotlight Tour: Joanna Quiner

Joanna Quiner of Beverly was a self-taught sculptor known to start sculpting late in life around the age of 40. After a visit to the Athenæum in Boston she decided to try her hand at sculpture and she produced a bust of Beverly’s own Robert Rantoul. Not only was it Quiner’s first bust, it was also the first sculpture by a woman artist to be shown at the Athenæum. This Spotlight Talk will explore Quiner’s life in Beverly, her introduction to the sculpting process, the works by Quiner in our collection, and the legacy she left upon her death in 1868. Free and online here.
