During its record-breaking run of over 35 years, magic historians called Marco the Magi’s production of Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company “Magicdom’s most incredible venture,” “A phenomenon on Cabot Street,” and “An achievement unparalleled in the history of recorded conjuring.” The company’s remarkable founder and director, Cesareo Pelaez, who performed as Marco the Magi, was widely considered a living legend in the world of magic.
Join original magic company members David Bull and Rick Heath for a look back at this beloved show in Always a Wonder to Remember: Stories of Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company.
In over 2,600 performances, from February 20, 1977 through May 27, 2012, theatre goers and magic aficionados traveled from near and far to the Cabot and Larcom Theatres to witness Marco the Magi along side David Bull, who commanded the stage in the starring role of Le Grand David, produce seemingly countless wonders. Rick Heath, company artist, performed with them as a comic assistant.
David and Rick will be sharing their unique perspectives through images and stories on what it was like to work with Cesareo, who died in 2012, in the context of a world-renowned stage magic troupe, located not on the Great White Way or in Las Vegas, but in Beverly, Massachusetts.
As eminent magic historian Dr. John Booth stated in his 1986 Wonders of Magic, “Two different luxurious magic productions of Broadway calibre playing in tandem theatres in one small city . . . constitutes a miracle no other era in time has witnessed.”
